Watches Market Brand Battle: Premium, Mid-Range and Value Players Compared

The global watches market was valued at USD 69.1 billion in 2025 and is estimated at USD 71.9 billion in 2026. It is forecast to reach USD 96.8 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 4.3% from 2026 to 2033. Asia Pacific leads with a 49.2% revenue share, and analog watches account for 91.8% of the market.

Market Overview and Growth

The watches market is growing steadily rather than spectacularly. Between the 2026 estimate and the 2033 forecast, the industry adds roughly USD 25 billion in annual value. That growth comes from consumers choosing better, more wearable products, not from a surge in buyers.

Asia Pacific anchors the market with 49.2% of 2025 revenue, driven by rising disposable incomes and demand for premium and mid-range quartz and mechanical watches. Consumers there want precision, craftsmanship and stylish everyday pieces.

The strongest demand signal is intent. A October 2025 Luxury Tribune article reports that 26% of consumers still wear traditional watches, and 54% of respondents plan to buy a mechanical or quartz watch within the next year. In other words, planned purchases outnumber current wearers by a wide margin.

Design is shifting too. Slimmer, minimalist quartz models are gaining ground over bulky mechanical pieces, from European city centers to Asia's urban millennials. Buyers also judge value on more than price. A 2025 Clootrack analysis of 10,691 Indian consumer surveys ranked daily usability first and warranty coverage second, with buyers expecting at least one to two years. Strap strength and water resistance also shaped brand preference.

Emerging markets add momentum. India's watch imports grew nearly 7% between January and August 2025 and about 30% over two years. In Mexico, 62% of consumers are considering a traditional watch purchase, according to JCK Online. The main headwind is trade policy: a 39% tariff on Swiss watch imports into the U.S. took effect in August 2025, prompting price increases from brands like Rolex and Patek Philippe and moderating near-term U.S. demand.

Key Segments

The dominant segments are stable, and the smaller ones are growing faster. Analog watches hold 91.8% of the market, men account for 75.9%, and offline channels capture 75.6%. Yet the segments that trail in share are mostly outgrowing the 4.3% market average. This is my reading of the report's numbers: the market's center of gravity is fixed, but its growth is happening at the edges.

By type: Analog watches stay dominant on timeless design, mechanical craftsmanship and precision. Digital watches are forecast to grow at 3.6% through 2033, supported by affordability, durability and practical features like alarms, timers and chronographs. Digital is the one smaller segment growing below the market average.

By price range: Premium watches generated 28.2% of global revenue in 2025. They sell fewer units, but at prices that run from thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Resale value matters here: 16% of consumers consider it when buying new, and 17% of secondhand buyers see their purchase as an investment. The luxury segment is forecast to grow at 4.8%. In India, 78% of consumers plan to buy a watch for themselves within a year, and the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index shows luxury watches appreciating 138% over the past decade, ahead of art.

By end user: Men hold 75.9% of the market, reflecting the long-standing view of watches as status symbols and collectibles. Women's watches are forecast to grow at 5.0%, the fastest of the end-user segments, as brands expand female-focused collections in mid-range and affordable luxury.

By age: Buyers aged 25 to 44 make up 48% of consumers, those 45 and older 38%, and those 18 to 24 account for 14%. The youngest group is small, but it shapes future demand for affordable automatic and quartz models from brands like Seiko, Tissot and Citizen.

By distribution channel: Offline sales captured 75.6% in 2025. According to JCK, 60% of consumers prefer buying luxury watches in physical stores, citing the chance to try the product (51%), personal interaction with staff (44%) and convenience (39%). Online sales are forecast to grow at 5.6%, the fastest of any segment in the report, led by emerging markets and mid-range purchases.

By region: India is the standout at a projected 5.4% CAGR, fueled by rising incomes in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities and localized manufacturing. North America and Canada are each forecast at 4.4%, Europe at 4.2%, Japan at 3.9%, Middle East & Africa at 3.7% and Central & South America at 3.2%. China accounted for a 45.9% revenue share, the U.S. for 86.2% and Germany for 20.5% in 2025, as the report states them.

Recent launches show how the compact quartz trend is reaching the top of the market. In May 2024, Audemars Piguet introduced three Royal Oak models powered by quartz in a 23 mm diameter. In November 2024, Tissot added a 25 mm quartz model to its PRX collection with a 100 m water resistance rating. In September 2025, Citizen announced three Eco-Drive Promaster Skyhawk watches priced between USD 795 and USD 850. In December 2024, Seiko released the Grand Seiko SBGJ283, an Asia Pacific exclusive limited to 150 pieces.

The Outlook

The watches market will keep growing on three things: Asia Pacific's scale, a buyer base that wants usable, well-made watches, and a growing luxury and resale market. Brands that combine compact design, solid warranties and strong online access are best placed to capture the faster-growing segments.
