CLAT UG Entrance Exam Syllabus: Complete Guide

The CLAT UG entrance exam syllabus covers five sections: English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques. The paper has 120 questions in 2 hours, taken offline. It tests reading and reasoning, not prior knowledge of law.

If you are finishing Class 12 and thinking about a law degree, the first question is usually simple: what exactly will the exam ask me? The CLAT UG entrance exam syllabus is the set of topics that the test covers. Knowing it early lets you plan your study time around what is actually tested, rather than around rumours or old guides.

What the CLAT UG syllabus means

CLAT, the Common Law Admission Test, is India's national law entrance exam. It is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities for admission to the five year integrated LLB (UG) and the one year LLM (PG) at participating National Law Universities. The UG syllabus applies to the five year integrated programme, such as BA LLB, BBA LLB or B.Com LLB. The LLM is a separate postgraduate test, so do not mix up the two when you read preparation material.

In plain words, the syllabus tells you the subjects and skills you will be judged on. It does not ask you to memorise statutes. A full syllabus reference is available from CLAT Coaching Delhi, which is useful when you want to check the topic list line by line.

Who this exam suits, and who it does not

CLAT UG suits students who finish Class 12 and want to study law at a National Law University. Any stream can apply, so a student from science, commerce or humanities is eligible to sit the test. Check the official eligibility rules for age and attempts before you apply, because those details are set by the conducting body and can change.

It is not the right exam for everyone. If you expect a test of prior legal knowledge, you will be disappointed, because CLAT checks reading and reasoning. If you only want the LLM, you need the postgraduate paper, which is a different test. And remember that a law degree is not the end of the process. To practise law, a student who completes a five year integrated LLB must also clear the All India Bar Examination. The five sections explained, with an example for each

English Language

This section is built on passages followed by questions. You are asked to find the main idea, understand the author's tone and infer meaning from the text. A passage on a court judgment, for example, tests whether you can follow the argument and pick out the author's point of view. It does not test whether you already know the law. Regular reading of long-form articles is the best preparation, because it builds the speed and focus the passages demand.

Current Affairs including General Knowledge

Questions here check whether you follow national and international events. A question on a recent national event tests awareness, not memory of a single date. This is why a short daily news habit of 15 to 20 minutes usually works better than a frantic revision of old news in the last month. Keep a simple notebook of key events, organised by theme, and revise it every week. You can read more on our page on AILET Exam Full Form, Eligibility, Pattern and Syllabus | Clat Coaching.

Legal Reasoning

Legal Reasoning gives you a short fact situation and a rule, then asks whether an action is valid under that rule. You reason only from the rule stated in the question, not from outside knowledge. For example, if the rule says a contract needs a clear offer and acceptance, you check each step in the facts against that rule. Careful, literal reading wins here, and students who rush often pick the option that sounds fair rather than the one the rule supports.

Logical Reasoning

Logical Reasoning uses sets of conditions, arguments and patterns. A typical question gives a set of conditions and asks which option must be true. The method is step by step elimination. Write down the conditions in short form, test each option against them, and discard any option that breaks a condition. This section rewards patience and discipline more than speed alone.

Quantitative Techniques

This section tests basic numerical ability inside passages and short problems, such as percentages and ratios. The challenge is not difficult mathematics. It is doing enough accurate calculations within a 2 hour paper while the other four sections also need your attention. Practise mental arithmetic and estimation so that you can quickly rule out wrong options.

For a closer look at how topics are split within these sections and how much each one carries, see the CLAT 2027 topic weightage breakdown. Treat any percentages you find online as indicative, and confirm them against the official notification.

Exam pattern and the marking scheme

The paper has 120 multiple choice questions, based on passages, and you have 2 hours to answer them offline. The total is spread across the five sections. Because the paper is long, pacing matters as much as knowledge. A simple rule is to keep moving: if a question is taking more than about a minute longer than you planned, mark it and return later.

The marking scheme rewards correct answers and penalises wrong ones. As commonly set out in the exam pattern, each correct answer earns plus 1, each wrong answer loses 0.25, and unattempted questions score zero. Here is a worked example. Suppose you answer 90 questions correctly, get 20 wrong and leave 10 unattempted. That is 90 correct and 20 wrong, which makes 90 minus 5, or 85 out of 120. The 20 wrong answers cost you 5 marks in total, which is why random guessing is costly. For the full pattern table, see the full CLAT 2027 exam pattern table.

Choosing between CLAT and other law exams

The main law entrance exams after 12th are CLAT, AILET, SLAT, CUET UG for law and state exams such as MH CET Law. CLAT is the most widely taken of these. It is also the single test that most National Law Universities use to fill their seats, and one All India Rank can be used to seek admission across many universities at once. That breadth is its main advantage. More on this is on our page on Blog, CLAT & AILET Prep Guides, Strategies & Exam Updates | Clat Coaching.
