e-Challan System in India: Features, Benefits, and Online Resolution
The e-Challan system is an initiative by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) designed to digitize traffic enforcement across India. It replaces traditional paper tickets with an automated, transparent mechanism for penalizing traffic violations.
How the e-Challan System Works

Detection: High-definition CCTV cameras, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, speed guns, and traffic police handheld devices capture real-time traffic violations.

Data Integration: The captured image or video is linked to the national Vahan (vehicle registration) and Sarathi (driving license) databases.

Issuance & Notification: An electronic ticket containing the offense details, timestamp, location, and fine amount is generated. The vehicle owner receives an SMS notification on their registered mobile number.

Fine amounts are standardized under the Motor Vehicles Act:

How to Pay Your e-Challan Online
Vehicle owners must settle fines within 60 days of issuance to avoid legal summons or court proceedings:

Visit the Official Portal: Go to echallan.parivahan.gov.in.

Fetch Violation Details: Click on Check Challan Status and enter your Challan Number, Vehicle Number, or Driving License Number along with the CAPTCHA code.

Review & Pay: Select the pending challan, click Pay Now, choose a payment method (UPI, Net Banking, Credit/Debit Card), and complete the payment.

Save Receipt: Download and store the digital transaction receipt for your records.
