From Fishing Nets to Fuel Systems: Mapping the Nylon Market by Application

Nylon is a workhorse polymer. Under the hood of your car, inside your phone charger, and in outdoor jackets and fishing nets, it is hard to avoid. According to Grand View Research, the global nylon market was valued at USD 38.4 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 68.4 billion by 2033, growing at a 7.7% CAGR from 2026 to 2033.

This post covers where demand is coming from, who is competing for it, and why recycling regulation is now a strategic issue for every nylon producer.

Product and Application Segments

Nylon 6 vs. Nylon 66

Nylon 6 is the volume leader, with roughly 56% of global revenue in 2025. It is cost-effective, easy to process, and has well-balanced mechanical properties. It replaces metals such as steel, aluminum, and brass in many parts, and it has a strong presence in carpets, apparel, and fishing nets. Its fabrics are smooth, quick-drying, and keep their shape after washing.

Nylon 66 is the faster-growing product, expected to expand at a 7.9% CAGR through 2033. Its higher heat and chemical resistance suits demanding environments, such as glass-fiber-reinforced grades for under-the-hood automotive parts.

Application Segments

  • Automobile: The largest segment, at about 37% of 2025 revenue, and the fastest-growing at an 8.2% CAGR. Nylon is used in air intake manifolds, cooling systems, headlamp bezels, airbag containers, and wheel covers.
  • Electrical & Electronics: Connectors, housings, and electrical protection devices, boosted by EV and renewable energy growth.
  • Engineering Plastics: Metal replacement in industrial components where strength and wear resistance matter.
  • Textiles: Apparel, carpets, and fishing nets.

Lightweighting is the common thread. Fuel-efficiency and emissions rules push automakers toward lighter materials, and engine downsizing creates demand for oil- and heat-resistant compounds.

Prominent Market Competitors

The competitive landscape combines global chemical majors with specialized polyamide players. The companies profiled in the report include:

  • BASF SE
  • Lanxess
  • Huntsman International LLC
  • AdvanSix
  • Ube Industries Ltd.
  • Domo Chemicals
  • Toray Industries, Inc.
  • Ashley Polymers, Inc.
  • Ascend Performance Materials
  • Toyobo Co., Ltd.
  • Goodfellow

The market is innovation-heavy and sees frequent M&A as players look for new production technologies, talent, and scale. Recent moves show where the competition is heading:

  • BASF (March 2025): Started up what it describes as the world's first industrial plant making loopamid, a recycled polyamide 6 from textile waste, at its Shanghai Caojing site. The plant has a 500-tonne annual capacity, and the material performs comparably to virgin nylon 6.
  • Samsara Eco (September 2025): The Australian startup opened its first plant in New South Wales, using enzymatic recycling to break down hard-to-recycle nylon 66 and polyester textile waste.

Competitive advantage is shifting from cost and performance alone to recycled and bio-based credentials as well.

Regional Regulations Affecting Plastic Recycling

Nylon is not usually the target of headline plastic bans, but broader recycling, extended producer responsibility (EPR), and chemical rules affect it directly. The regulatory picture varies by region.

Europe. This is the most demanding regime. REACH and ECHA rules govern chemical safety. Packaging legislation (the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation), ecodesign requirements, and the push for textile EPR schemes under the revised Waste Framework Directive all raise the bar on recyclability and recycled content. Because nylon is used in textiles, carpets, and fishing gear, it is exposed to these rules. EPR for fishing gear under the Single-Use Plastics Directive is one example.

North America. OSHA workplace rules and NESHAP air-emission standards apply to production. On recycling, the US is driven largely at state level, with EPR laws for packaging in states such as California, Oregon, Colorado, and Maine. Producers selling into multiple states face a patchwork of obligations.

Asia Pacific. The region leads the market on share, and policy is moving quickly. China, the largest regional market, has tightened solid waste import rules. India has introduced EPR obligations through its Plastic Waste Management Rules. Producers expanding across the region need to plan for these differences.

What it means for producers:

  • Rising compliance costs for virgin, fossil-based production.
  • A premium for chemically recycled and bio-based nylon grades.
  • Growing demand from automotive, electronics, and apparel OEMs for traceable recycled content.

Regulations in this area change often, so confirm the current status of specific rules in your target markets before making decisions.

The Bottom Line

The nylon market is growing steadily, led by automotive demand and by nylon 66 in high-performance uses. Producers will win on both performance and sustainability. Recycled and bio-based innovations are the biggest opportunity, while raw material volatility, regulatory pressure, and substitutes such as polypropylene remain the main constraints.
