A Rajasthan tour in winter, roughly November to February, is the most comfortable time to walk forts and sit outdoors. Allow 10 to 12 days to link Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur without constant driving. Add Pushkar, Ranthambore or Bundi if time allows, and start with the forts.

I have planned winter trips across Rajasthan for many years, and the same questions come up every season. How long do we need? In what order should we go? Is the desert too cold at night? Is the Ranthambore detour worth the drive? This guide answers those questions in the order I would walk you through them if you were sitting in my office in Jaipur. The aim is a route that feels unhurried, with honest trade-offs at each step.

How many days Rajasthan deserves, and for whom

Rajasthan is India's largest state, and most first-time visitors are drawn to four fort cities: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur. Ten to 12 days is the realistic allowance for these four without spending your holiday in a car. Each city needs time to absorb, and the distances between them are long enough that a rushed schedule leaves you more time on the road than in front of a fort.

If you have only a week, pick Jaipur plus one contrasting stop, either the desert around Jaisalmer or the lakes of Udaipur. Trying to fit all four cities into five days usually means seeing each one from a moving vehicle. For the state-wide circuit planner, including how rail compares with a chauffeur car and the seasonal weather windows, see our Rajasthan Complete Travel Guide.

Getting there and the Delhi, Agra and Fatehpur Sikri gateways

Most international visitors arrive in Delhi, and that is a sensible place to begin. Give your first morning to Old Delhi rather than trying to start the Rajasthan leg on arrival day. Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid and the spice lanes around Khari Baoli are best approached on foot with someone who knows which lanes to take. A private guide makes the difference here, and our Old Delhi Heritage & Food Walk is one option for that.

Agra is usually a side trip rather than a stop on the Rajasthan circuit. The Taj Mahal deserves an early start, when the crowds are thinner and the light is softer. Check the current opening times before you book, as they can change. For a private early visit, you can arrange this through Experience My India, which also covers the logistics from Delhi.

If you have an extra half day, Fatehpur Sikri is a worthwhile stop nearby. Akbar's red sandstone capital is a short distance from Agra and is best seen with a guide who can explain how the complex was used. A guided day trip to Fatehpur Sikri keeps the transfers simple.

Jaipur first: Amber Fort and the walled city

Give Jaipur one to two days, and start with Amber Fort. It sits a short drive outside the city, and visiting in the early morning means you climb the hill before the heat and the coach parties arrive. Winter mornings can be cool, so carry a light layer for the walk up and down.

The walled city is best left for the afternoon. The highlights are the Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Johari Bazaar, and each rewards slow attention. Jantar Mantar in particular makes more sense with an explanation of how the instruments measure time and the position of the sun. If you want a structured visit, a Jaipur City Tour with a private guide covers these sites in a logical order.

Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur and optional stops

Order the western cities so the desert comes after the forts have been seen. Start in Jodhpur with Mehrangarh Fort, which rises above the blue houses of the old city. Then travel on to Jaisalmer, where the golden fort and the Thar Desert are the reason to come. A Thar Desert camel safari is offered from Jaisalmer, and a winter evening in the dunes is one of the most rewarding experiences of the trip. Pack warm layers, because desert nights in winter are cold even when the afternoons feel pleasant.

Finish in Udaipur, where the lakes and the lake palace give the route a softer end. An Udaipur lake palace experience and a Rajasthani folk evening are both listed among our Rajasthan experiences if you want an evening that is not just sightseeing. Readers who want more detail can start with our page on Amber Fort Experience.

Ranthambore's tiger safari is a detour that adds real driving time, so include it only if wildlife is a priority. Safari timings and permits vary, so confirm them before you fix the route. Pushkar is a shorter addition, and it is worth it if you want a quieter town with a lake and temples close to the centre.

Best time to visit by season

November to February is the most comfortable window for walking forts, sitting outdoors and travelling between cities. Days are mild and nights are cooler, which suits long days on foot. Early November can still be warm in the afternoons, while February is pleasant and a little quieter. Desert nights stay cold for much of the season, so plan for that in Jaisalmer.

Festival travel needs its own planning. The Pushkar Camel Fair and Diwali in Jaipur draw large crowds and book up early. Fair dates shift from year to year, so check them before you fix the route rather than assuming they fall on the same days as last time.

Etiquette and what to skip

Rajasthan's forts, temples and shrines are living places of worship as well as monuments, and a little care goes a long way. Dress modestly at temples and shrines, covering shoulders and knees, and remove footwear where asked. Ask before photographing people, especially at religious sites, and accept a polite refusal without argument.

In towns, bargaining in the bazaars is expected, but do it with good humour rather than pressure. Avoid long drives in the middle of the day, when heat and traffic slow everything and tempers fray. Skip rushed day trips that try to cover several forts in one day, because you will remember the car park more than the fort. One deep visit to a single fort is worth more than three glimpses.

A practical sample day in Jaipur

Start early. Leave for Amber Fort before the heat builds, and allow time for the walk up and a slow look around the courtyards. Return to the city for a late breakfast, which gives the midday crowds time to thin out at the palaces.

In the afternoon, visit the Hawa Mahal, City Palace and Jantar Mantar, then finish in Johari Bazaar, where jewellery and textiles are sold. Keep the pace relaxed. If you are interested in cooking, a Jaipur cooking class is listed among our culinary experiences and can replace the bazaar visit on a day when you want to sit down and learn something.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for a Rajasthan tour in winter?

Allow 10 to 12 days to visit Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur without constant driving. If you have less time, choose Jaipur plus one contrasting stop, such as the Thar Desert or Udaipur's lakes, rather than squeezing in all four cities.
