The Basic Procedure 

Cleaning a bolt-action rifle like an Accuracy International AXSR is relatively straightforward. 

First, drop the magazine and clear the weapon by visually and physically inspecting the chamber. It is critical that you always observe all basic firearm safety precautions when handling your rifle, and that includes when cleaning. 

To clean the rifle, you will want: 

• A clean, clear space, such as a cleaning mat, and a gun vise if you have one, to hold the gun.
• Cleaning patches.
• A cleaning rod and rod guide. 
• Appropriately sized bore brushes.
• Bore solvent. 
• Slotted jags to hold the patches.

Remove the bolt from the rifle, then affix a slotted jag to the end of your cleaning rod. Soak the patch in bore solvent, then, using the cleaning rod guide, send that through the bore from chamber to muzzle. 

It is important to use a rod guide as well as to clean from chamber to muzzle, never the other way around, so as to prevent damage to the gun’s rifling or muzzle crowning. 

Once you’ve sent a saturated patch through the bore, you can remove the slotted jag and affix a cleaning brush appropriate for the bore. Pass this through the bore a few times and it should loosen some of the fouling in the bore. 

Then you can replace the slotted jag and a fresh patch, and pass this through from chamber to muzzle. Remove the patch once it comes out at the muzzle and you should notice it is fairly dark with fouling. 

Repeat this process until the patches you send through the barrel come out clean. 

Then you can replace the bolt of your rifle. For a more thorough cleaning, you will want to clean the bolt and trigger group as well, but for a preliminary cleaning after getting back from the range, this is all you need to do.

Why Cleaning Your Rifle Is Important 

Keeping your Accuracy International rifle, or any gun, clean is important for two main reasons. The first is that fouling can trap moisture and when it does so it will accelerate corrosion, which can be disastrous inside the bore. 

The other reason is that keeping the bore clean will uphold a higher standard of accuracy by removing powder and copper fouling.
