American-Made Knives: A Few Things to Understand

It’s no secret that American-made knives like LT Wright and White River Knives command a premium.

However, is the premium always worth it? In this market, it’s a question about cost that gets asked quite frequently.

The short answer is yes, and in the knife industry as in so many others, more often than not you get what you pay for.

That being said, a short explanation is warranted. Here’s what to know.

Why American-Made Knives Cost More but It’s Worth It Anyway

There are several big ticket reasons that American-made knives often exhibit higher-quality than lower-cost imports, pretty much all of which revolve around some or other aspect of quality control.

The first and most important aspect is steel. How steel is produced and how it is heat-treated will massively impact the quality of the steel as well as the performance of the knife.

Let’s just consider powder metallurgy steels here. These steels require a much more involved manufacturing process to ensure that their constituent carbides are evenly distributed. If there are not, there could be soft spots in the edge, not to mention much more brittle areas if there is a higher concentration of carbides in one area.

There’s also heat treatment to consider. Steel chemistry is one thing but how it is heat treated will impact both its toughness and edge retention. Too soft and it will not take an edge, too hard and it will either be too hard to sharpen or brittle, and frequently both.

American-made knives, from manufacturers that directly oversee or even handle heat treatment of each blade blank, often exhibit much more consistent heat treatments than imported counterparts.

Of course, even if you look beyond steel, knives that are made in the United States will also have their quality control checks performed here, and American-made products are generally considered higher-quality than more affordable imports. This is not universally true but there is enough legitimacy to the statement to consider it.

The Difference Between Made in America and Assembled in America

One other thing to be aware of as you search for American-made knives is to understand the difference between made in the United States and assembled in the United States.

Knives that are made in the United States, from start to finish, will often enjoy more consistent steel chemistry, more reliable heat treatments, and better fit and finish than their counterparts.

Those that are simply assembled in America may still exhibit top-tier fit and finish, but there could also be some question marks associated with the quality of the steel, scales, and other components that went into assembly, especially if they were imported.
